Life and Exploration Programs That Stimulate the Mind and Soul.

Our unique Horizons Life and Exploration Program offers adults with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to engage in a rich, experience-filled life. Adhering to the guiding principles of Exploration, Community Participation, and Wellness, the carefully planned activities promote learning through meaningful interactions with new people, places, concepts, and projects.

Throughout the week, individuals participate in numerous excursions and experiences based on a theme that they help plan with staff members. Activities may include craft and/or hands-on projects, volunteer work, tours, and training/learning opportunities. Beyond themed activities, persons supported by the program also participate in weekly activities that cultivate physical and emotional health.

In addition, the programming occurs at approximately the same time each day and features a mix of both community and program-based activities. This type of organized, routine schedule is ideal for persons who are in need of a structured environment but can benefit from interesting and diverse pursuits.

Below are some examples of the themed activities for a week:

  • Hispanic Heritage Week.

    • Make nachos and salsa using authentic and natural ingredients.
    • Create colorful Mexican paper flowers based on cultural reference books.
    • Learn about and play adapted versions of Hispanic sports such as Mexican Futbol.
    • Drive to Washington, D.C. to receive a tour of the Mexican Cultural Institute.
    • See the presentation of the Celebremos Panama Musical Extravaganza Theater Dance at the Smithsonian.
  • Rocks, Gems, and Stones Week.

    • Complete a Scavenger Nature Hunt in the neighboring park.
